My Son – My Gift
When my daughter was 15 she started dating a boy who lived across the country. He came to visit us and he was a wonderful kid. Smart, funny and hansom, Jeremy was the whole kit and caboodle! He came from a single parent home that was not abusive, but no full of happiness at all. Jeremy came to live with us. After dating my daughter for many years the two grew apart and Jeremy and my daughter Magen split up. They loved each other the way a brother and sister love each other.
He had grown up without his Mom, who left when he was a little boy, so I was his Mom. He is such an amazing kid and I love him as much as if I had given birth to him! As a son I could not ask for a better kid and I am so Proud of him! One evening I was at work in a meeting and my phone kept going off. After several calls I answered it because I thought my son my be in trouble. He never called me when he was working.
Jeremy: Mom, I’m gay.
Mom: Are you sure baby?
Jeremy: Yes Mame
Mom: OK Baby. I am in a meeting. Can we talk about this when I get home or do you need me now?
Jeremy: When you get home is fine. I love you.
Mom: I love you too angel. Talk to you soon.
My son has had a long struggle in his transition. The world is a cruel place and many times the most ignorant among us are the people who can make a difference! My son is a well adjusted young man. He graduated 3rd in his class in Computer Science at LSUS. He is successful in his job and his personal life. He is in a long term relationship with a wonderful young man that is a part of our family now as well!
I think the trick to being able to be yourself starts with acceptance at home. If a person fears the people he/she loves the most, sometimes they suffer in silence. I love my son! I have everything in the world to be proud of and not one thing to be ashamed of! As in every decision in life, the support you get at home makes the difference! More people need to be there for their kids.
I also have a No-Tolerance policy for stupidity. I will defend these young people no matter where I am or who I am talking to. Everyone is beautiful in his own way. I believe…..
