Legal, Yet Single
My partner and I have been together for a few years and we decided to get married earlier this year, legally married that is. We chose Connecticut as the state we would marry because we are Florida residents, and after 18 hours in a car we had the most significant, emotional, and private ceremony we could think of. The only problem is that because on the state we reside in it is not recognized, we have to submit everything as “single” individuals.
As we understood that our marriage would not be recognized in our state we still went ahead with it, and we are proud and happy for doing it. The only place that has “recognized” our marriage here in Florida is our apartment complex, as weird as that may sound.
It seems to be quite ridiculous that we, as thousands of couples, live a married life with joint accounts, joint property, joint loans, credit cards, insurance, cars, etc; but then again we are not “good enough” to be legally married. Just because 100 years ago or more someone dictated a marriage was between a man and a woman. Well times have changed A LOT, as well as technology and life over all. Don’t you think it’s time the law should be up to date with life and the world we live in? We do.
