I know what you are thinking. She drives that big truck all by herself!
Yes I do, and before I entered the construction world, I drove over the road in a 53 foot semi truck for four years!
I have always been different from other girls, being I have always never identified with being female.
Yes I am gender queer and very proud of it! I was hired by a friend who owned five dump trucks and needed another driver. I became that driver who took immediately to the dump truck and loved my job!
Unfortunately I caught the attention of the supervisor of one of the construction sites we had been working on for a few months. This supervisor let me know one day that he didn’t like me while I was working a very hard day with about 15 other drivers. We were hauling dirt from one end of the freeway to the other.
While I was backing my dump truck to the loader, the supervisor came up to my truck window and nastily told me I did not know what I was doing!
Now mind you, I have been driving commercially for five years now and was very able to do the job correctly.
After his rude comments to me, he then went on to make my day absolutely miserable by getting others on the job site to join in with him in his abuse. I was pushed to work harder, drive faster and endure comments about being a dyke. This supervisor also managed to turn the other drivers against me as well by making it look like I was holding everything up in production.
My boss was later told by said supervisor that I was to slow and girls should not be on the construction site! So know I’m sitting home when I should be working. What would you do?
What could I have done differently? I think this will torture my mind for quite sometime……
